چکیده

In order to build technology that has the ability to answer questions relevant to national and global security, e.g., on food insecurity in certain parts of the world, one has to implement machine reading technology that extracts causal mechanisms from texts. Unfortunately, many of these texts describe these interactions using vague, high-level language. One particular example is the use of gradable adjectives, i.e., adjectives that can take a range of magnitudes such as small or slight. Here we propose a method for estimating specific concrete groundings for a set of such gradable adjectives. We use crowdsourcing to gather human language intuitions about the impact of each adjective, then fit a linear mixed effects model to this data. The resulting model is able to estimate the impact of novel instances of these adjectives found in text. We evaluate our model in terms of its ability to generalize to unseen data and find that it has a predictive R of 0.632 in general, and 0.677 on a subset of high-frequency adjectives.

Identification, characterization, and grounding of gradable terms in clinical text

Gradable adjectives are inherently vague and are used by clinicians to document medical interpretations (e.g., severe reaction, mild symptoms). We present a comprehensive study of gradable adjectives used in the clinical domain. We automatically identify gradable adjectives and demonstrate that they have a substantial presence in clinical text. Further, we show that there is a specific pattern ...

Meaning and Context in Gradable Adjectives i Meaning and Context in Children’s Understanding of Gradable Adjectives

This work provides the first experimental evidence that adults and children as young as three years of age distinguish between three types of gradable adjective meanings – relative, absolute maximum standard, and absolute minimum standard – based on the role of the context in setting the standard of comparison. These results lend support to a typology of gradable adjectives determined by abstra...

Vagueness and Grammar: The Semantics of Relative and Absolute Gradable Adjectives∗

This paper investigates the way that lexical semantic properties of linguistic expressions influence vagueness, focusing on the interpretation of the positive (unmarked) form of gradable adjectives. I begin by developing a semantic analysis of the positive form of ‘relative’ gradable adjectives, expanding on previous proposals by further motivating a semantic basis for vagueness and by precisel...

The Other Pole of Degree Modification of Gradable Nouns by Size Adjectives: A Mandarin Chinese Perspective

Size adjectives can have degree readings when they modify gradable nouns. However, a cross-linguistic variation exists with respect to what type(s) of size adjectives in a particular language can have such readings. In English degree readings are available only for size adjectives that predicate bigness, and in Mandarin Chinese degree readings are available for all size adjectives irrespective ...
